Selah Hoerger Music

Creating music about the struggles of life through the lens of faith

About Selah

When I was a child, while my grandmother cooked breakfast, she would open her CD player and put in Henry Mancini's The Thorn Birds Theme. Waltzing to this song around the kitchen is a fond memory; one that sparked my love for music.

My passion is to make and be a part of music that is both emotionally and technically complex. Music that reaches people in their need, tells them hard truths they need to hear, while also maintaining musical technique and integrity.

Very significant parts of my musical journey include piano lessons, high school and collegiate level choir, and music in the church.

Aside from music, I thoroughly enjoy spending time with friends, exploring the mountains, engaging in religious activities, and channeling my inner five year-old.

Portfolio

Weep With Me

Written in the span of one night, this choral work conveys deep themes of mourning and shame.

The Refining

What started as assignment to write in an odd-meter, turned into a beautiful melody about the gentleness and humility of Jesus.

In Vain
Heart

A rich orchestration written for orchestra, representing the sweetness of love that is seen all around you.

Drawing inspiration from the soulful harmonies of the Gospel genre, this choral piece uses Biblical allegory alongside real life struggles to contemplate the meaning of faith.

Loose Ends
Seed

Written in the style of R&B, this piece reflects a dialogue: one side expressing the anxiety of having unresolved conflicts in one's life, the other a reminder not to dwell on those things.

Based on the Parable of the Sower from Matthew 13, this piece for chamber orchestra and two soloists is meant to represent the seed that grows, and the seed that chokes.

Services

Composition Commission

I can set music to words, words to music, or create an entire piece from scratch. This can be a classical composition (ex. choir, orchestra, etc.) or commercial compositions (songs written in styles like jazz, pop, R&B, etc.) I specialize in writing vocal music (choral or modern).

Ex. Gospel Choral Piece In Vain vs. Singer/Songwriter Song The Refining

My ability to read sheet music, as well
as my highly-trained ear help me learn
music quickly. With years of classical
and commercial training, I offer diverse options for a variety of clients. I have had experience as both a vocalist and producer in a recording session.
